When Ashley contacted me about doing a photography session with her 2-year-old daughter, she mentioned she was a widow. My heart hurt for her.
Later, she told me a little more of her story: her husband, Sgt. Ian M. Tawney, USMC, gave his life for his country just 2 months before his first baby girl was born. Having watched my husband head off to Afghanistan when I was 6 months along with our first baby, this really hit home to me. My husband came home. Hers did not. Thankful doesn’t even begin to describe how I feel toward Ashley and toward every person who has lost a loved one in service to our country. I have such admiration for Ashley and beautiful little Claire for how they have refused to allow incredibly difficult times to destroy them. Claire is as vibrant, energetic, and joyful a little girl as I have ever met, and I know it is because Ashley has selflessly committed to creating a loving home for her. Claire may never have had the chance to meet her daddy, but he has left her an incredible legacy that will never be forgotten.
After I wipe my tears… I just have to smile at the joy this little girl brings. What fun we had creating memories together!
